Resources to live well with SMA

Neuromuscular clinics provide specialised care for neuromuscular
conditions, including SMA. Coordinated care through a
neurologist is recommended, and SMA clinics offer proactive care.

Home modifications

What changes could you consider?

Changes to the structure or fittings of your home can improve safety and comfort as well as increasing your independence.

Home modifications may be included in your NDIS plan. As they can range from simple to complex, you may need an occupational therapist to help you decide what is best for your situation and ensure you get the most benefit.

Simple changes

Simple changes are usually inexpensive, quick and effective without any redesigning needed. Examples include:

  • Non-slip mats
  • Grab rails
  • Handrails
  • Lever taps and door handles
  • Step wedges
  • Sensor lights
  • Doorway widening

Complex or specialised changes

Complex or specialised changes usually require professional support and may or may not require structural changes. Examples include:

  • Ramp installation
  • Lowering kitchen benchtops
  • Movable cabinets
  • Bathroom modifications
